Over 17,800 people are still listed as missing following the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the regional office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Belgrade disclosed on Wednesday.
"For years, the Red Cross office has striven to bring about more answers on the fate of the missing people to their families," news from Belgrade quoted the office head Paul Henri Arni as saying.
The figures, released on the eve of the International Day of the Disappeared which falls on Aug. 30, show that as of this July there are 13,449 people listed as missing in Bosnia, 2,386 in Croatia and 2,047 in Kosovo.
Arni said families have been left in hopeless situation and that it is of utmost importance to devote more time to the question of missing persons.
